The Death of the Last Human

 It is a fine afternoon. You are sitting on your comfortable chair, sipping a cup of fragrant coffee, listening to Mozert’s Lacrimosa as you read “All Tomorrows'' and imagine the impending doom lurking on the horizon of humanity. You close the book, and blink.

An average duration of human blink is .25 seconds. In the blink of an eye, a lot has happened. You are unaware of the 15,000 stars that were born during that fraction of a second or 300 stars that died, each containing an entire world inside of it. Their own solar system and perhaps, life.

Humanity hangs on a thread. We have come close to simply ceasing from existing many times, yet, we have survived against all odds. When the first Homo sapiens walked on Earth approximately 300,000 years ago, it would not know, one day the same leg would be able to walk on the moon. In the saga of time, humanity has been able to conquer the land, the sea and the air.

The question arises, does the saga of the great human race continue or will it, like everything, perish and simply not exist anymore?

Our Earth is 4.5 billion years old. It has mothered many animals and one day it will run out of resources. Scientists suspect that, if we continue being nonchalant about our water usage, it may run out by 2040. But we, as we always have, will find an appropriate solution for it. Many people have proposed our neighbor planet, Mars, as an alternative. The problem is resources.

If we, somehow, manage to land on Mars as the last surviving human beings, chances are, we will still not be able to find it as a close alternative. The saga of humanity is likely to end on Earth. A Dyson sphere is a concept in which intelligent life forms can use all emitted sunlight from its star as a resource. If we, somehow, build this hypothetical sphere and manage to use our sun's energy entirely, ultimately solving the problem of resources, it will still not be eternal as in 5 billion years from now, the sun will turn into a red giant and expand in size.

Intergalactic travel, as catchy as it sounds, is still far from being realistic and it only serves as an interesting topic of movies and novels. So even if we delve into the further future, our post Earth journey is never, realistically likely to happen.

"All Tomorrows" , even though a good book, is a material of fiction and we are yet to find a villainous, intelligent life form like Qus. Even if we genetically modify ourselves to sustain the human race, chances are the last human will be walking on Earth in a couple of century as our resources run out rapidly with increasing population- marking the tragic death of one of the most intelligent life forms to exist, the human race.
